About this California paycheck estimate

A high top rate is a rate on the last slice, not on the whole paycheck. The worked example below shows how much of the salary actually reaches it, and how much never does. Graduated, 1% to 13.30%%. Source for the state figures: California Franchise Tax Board, October 2026 Tax News (2026 indexing), via Tax Foundation structure and October 2026 FTB threshold reports. Federal figures: IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 and Social Security Administration 2026 wage base. This page is a dated 2026 snapshot. Figures for 2027 will need a dated update, and withholding on a single pay stub may differ from this annual estimate.

At a glance for California: 10 single brackets, starting at 1% and reaching 13.30%% at the top, with a standard deduction of $5,900 single, and joint thresholds that differ from single.

The full bracket ladder, and how little of most pay reaches the top

California has 10 single brackets, from 1% on the first slice to 13.30%% at the top. The table below is the single schedule. Joint thresholds differ, and the calculator uses the joint schedule when you choose married filing jointly. Head of household and married filing separately use the single schedule in this estimate, because the data file models single and joint schedules, so check your state schedule if those statuses change your thresholds.

How a high top rate still leaves a lower effective rate

First, annual gross pay is found from salary, or from hourly rate times hours per week times 52 weeks. Pre-tax deductions are subtracted. Federal tax uses the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction, $16,100 single, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household, $16,100 separate, from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32. Social Security is 6.2 percent up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500. Medicare is 1.45 percent on all wages, plus 0.9 percent additional Medicare over $200,000 single, $250,000 joint and $125,000 separate. State tax is then calculated on state taxable income as described above, and the result is split by pay frequency.

Local tax: This calculator models state income tax only. If your city or county levies its own income or earnings tax, that amount is not in this result and must be added separately.

A worked example, with the top rate kept in proportion

A married filing jointly earning $93,000 a year, paid biweekly, with no pre-tax deductions, has about $3,576.92 gross per paycheck. Federal tax is about $261.54 per paycheck, Social Security about $221.77, Medicare about $51.87, and state tax about $74.33 per paycheck, giving about $2,967.42 net per paycheck and about $77,152.90 net per year in this estimate. Federal taxable income in that example is about $60,800, and state taxable income about $81,200 where a state deduction applies. Change the filing status or the pay frequency and the per-paycheck figures move even though the annual figures do not.

Two California items kept out of the income tax line

The 1 percent Mental and Behavioral Health Services Tax over $1,000,000 of taxable income is already modelled as a rate step in the brackets above. California disability insurance, SDI, and the $158 single and $316 joint exemption credits are not in that line. SDI is a payroll item, not income tax, and the exemption credits come off tax rather than off income, so adding either to the bracket result would double count it.

Questions on a paycheck under a high top rate

Is the top rate the rate on my whole salary?

No. In a graduated system each slice is taxed at its own rate, and in a flat system the rate applies only after the deduction. The effective rate, total state tax divided by gross pay, is the comparable figure.

Why might my real paycheck differ from this estimate?

Your W-4, your employer's withholding table, credits, itemized deductions, and any local tax or employer-specific deductions can all move the real figure. This page is an annual estimate, not a replica of one pay stub.

Does this include local tax?

This calculator models state income tax only. If your city or county levies its own income or earnings tax, that amount is not in this result and must be added separately.
