California State Income Tax Brackets 2026: Ten Brackets, and the Payroll Line That Is Not One

California's 2026 single schedule has ten brackets from 1 percent to 13.3 percent, with a 5,900 dollar single standard deduction. Worked example at 80,000 dollars, plus the SDI and exemption credit lines.

Updated November 3, 2026

California has the longest bracket schedule in this batch, ten rates for a single filer, and the length is the point. Most of an ordinary salary sits in the low brackets, and the high rates at the top of the table touch only very high incomes. A reader who multiplies their whole salary by the top rate they have heard about will overstate their California tax several times over.

$768,213 to $1,000,00012.3%
Over $1,000,00013.3%

The joint schedule doubles the thresholds at the lower steps, with a $11,800 joint standard deduction against $5,900 single. Thresholds are the October 2026 Franchise Tax Board figures, indexed 3.4 percent for 2026. The 1 percent Behavioral Health Services Tax on taxable income over $1,000,000 is already modelled as the step from 12.3 percent to 13.3 percent in the table above.

Worked example: $80,000 single, slice by slice

Take a single filer with an $80,000 salary and no pre-tax deductions. Taxable income is $80,000 minus the $5,900 standard deduction, which is $74,100. That sits in the 8 percent bracket, so the marginal rate is 8 percent, but only the last slice is taxed at 8 percent:

SliceTax
First $11,456 at 1%$114.56
Next $15,701 at 2%$314.02
Next $15,704 at 4%$628.16
Next $16,637 at 6%$998.22
Remaining $14,602 at 8%$1,168.16
Total California income tax$3,223.12

The effective rate on taxable income is $3,223.12 divided by $74,100, about 4.35 percent, roughly half the marginal rate. On gross pay it is about 4.03 percent. A $5,000 raise from here would add $400 of California income tax at the 8 percent marginal rate, until taxable income crosses $75,197 and the next slice is taxed at 9.3 percent.

Two nearby lines that are not the bracket result

California disability insurance, SDI, is a payroll item, not income tax. At 1.3 percent in 2026 with no wage cap, it is $1,040 on $80,000 of wages, and it sits on a stub beside the income tax line rather than inside it. Separately, the $158 single exemption credit comes off tax rather than off income, so it would reduce the $3,223.12 figure to $3,065.12 on a return, while the calculator's bracket line does not apply it. Adding SDI to the bracket result and then subtracting the credit in the wrong place is how a California estimate most often goes wrong.

FAQs

Is California's top rate 13.3 percent on my whole salary?

No. That rate applies only to single taxable income over $1,000,000. At $80,000 of salary, the marginal rate is 8 percent and the effective rate is about 4 percent of gross pay.

What is the difference between the 12.3 and 13.3 percent steps?

The extra 1 percent over $1,000,000 of taxable income is the Behavioral Health Services Tax, modelled as a rate step. Below $1,000,000 it does not apply at all.

Why does my California withholding look higher than $3,223.12 a year?

Withholding often includes SDI alongside income tax, and it is calculated paycheck by paycheck rather than on the annual figure. Add the SDI line separately and compare annual totals.
